If you had to name the dietary supplements commanding the news reports and getting the most attention from the medical establishment, chances are vitamin D3 would be close to the top of your list.

Benefits of vitamin D3 supplementation

According to the Mayo Clinic, taking a multivitamin with vitamin D3 may help improve bone health. Vitamin D3 is credited with a whole range of health benefits, from preventing osteoporosis by strengthening bones to preventing heart disease by lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.

But we’re seeing reports warning that we’re not getting enough because we’re avoiding the sunshine that helps our bodies produce the amount of vitamin D3 we need to keep our bones strong. The solution: high-potency vitamin D3 10,000 IU (International Units) supplements.

There are questions, however, about whether high levels of vitamin D3 are safe and effective, and there are mixed opinions within the medical community about how much you need to take each day. There’s quite a gap between some of the medically recommended dosage levels, and new formulations that are far above those levels. Specifically, from typical vitamin D3 daily dosages of 400 IU to 1000 IU, daily supplements with vitamin D3 10,000 IU are now being offered online and at retail stores without a prescription.

We took a closer look at ADK 10 Vitamin and found some impressive claims based on the synergistic interaction of the three vitamins, but we also uncovered some cautions about high doses of vitamin D3 that you need to be aware of.

Optimal dosing of vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 10,000 IU is one of the highest levels you can get without a prescription, but is it safe? That’s the question we put to the experts, who appear united in their caution.

The Mayo Clinic advises that when it is taken in appropriate doses, vitamin D3 is “generally considered safe.” But, there are limits, they cite. The recommended daily amount of vitamin D3 is 400 international units (IU) for children up to age 12 months, 600 IU for people ages 1 to 70 years, and 800 IU for people over 70 years.

With vitamin D, “more is not necessarily better,” cautions the Cleveland Clinic’s functional medicine specialist Melissa Young, MD. “We recommend starting with a simple blood test to determine your levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and then prescribing vitamin D3 supplements.”

High dosing of vitamin D3 for limited times

These cautions lead to the question about vitamin D3 10,000 IU: “How much is enough, or too much?” The Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin D3 “for adults 19 years and older is 600 IU daily for men and women, and for adults >70 years it is 800 IU daily,” notes the Harvard Health T.H. Chan School of Public Health, further stating that the “maximum daily intake unlikely to cause harmful effects on health for vitamin D3 for adults and children ages 9+ is 4,000 IU.”

If you’re taking vitamin D3 10,000 IU, Dr. Young advises seeing your doctor every three months for blood tests “until you reach steady vitamin D3 blood levels. That usually takes six to 12 months. After that, checkups every year or every other year are fine.”

New research from Johns Hopkins Medicine finds that “blood levels of vitamin D3 higher than the top of the range suggested by the Institute of Medicine confer no additional benefit.” This finding, combined with previous studies, has “urged investigators to prescribe caution.” There is “no consensus among doctors on what is the right level of vitamin D3 in the blood for healthy people.” says Johns Hopkins’ professor Muhammad Amer, M.D.

Effects and symptoms of vitamin D3 overdosing

Whether vitamin D3 10,000 IU is harmful depends on the individual, but “those who take more than 4,000 IU a day of vitamin D3 might experience nausea and vomiting, poor appetite and weight loss, constipation, weakness, confusion and disorientation, heart rhythm problems, and kidney stones and kidney damage,” the Mayo Clinic asserts.

Overly high levels of vitamin D3 may also cause allergic reactions. Furthermore, there is a risk of developing hypercalcemia, a metabolic condition that can be triggered by excessive vitamin D3 ingestion, leading to overabundance of calcium in the blood, and causing symptoms similar to those above.
